THE GLADSTONE CLIFF-HANGER! |
Kourarau Dam Road Motorcycle Hillclimb |
|
COMPETE FOR THE "KING OF THE CLIFFHANGER" TITLE.If you enjoy blatting up the Rimutukas then come and try this road. The hillclimb is held on the Te Wharau Rd (the Kourarau hydro dam is part-way up this road). This 6.8km road climbs approx. 1000ft and has 27 corners (give or take a slight bend or two). The road surface is good with only a few bumps and ruts to challenge man (or woman) and machine. For half the distance the road clings to the side of the hill (offering good views over the Wairarapa valley). The remainder of the course cuts through the surrounding farmland in a series of fast sweeping curves. The hillclimb is to be held on the 11th and 12th March 2006. Fun/practice day on Saturday.....Saturday is a fun/practice day. The aim is to encourage people to have a go, so go on...have a go. Entry fee is $30,00 for this day. You can run as many bikes as you like for this fee. See the entry form for more details. The "King of the Cliffhanger" competition will be run on SundayFastest rider up the road wins the prize. Prize money will be paid to the two Cliffhanger classes, namely:- Junior... up to 600cc Senior... 601cc to open Support classes are for any motorcycle or sidecar. So bring along your road bikes, Classics/Post classic machines and have some fun. Rider clothing is to be either one piece leathers, leather or kevlar jackets with leather, nylon motocross or heavy worsted trousers. Boots are to be leather or leather substitute at least 25cm high or plastic motocross boots (refer to MNZ rule section 8). Helmets can be open or full face but must conform to MNZ rule 8-2. Back protectors are recommended. As riders must remain at the finishing area until all runs are completed, it won't be possible to enter more than one class per run. Riders will be given two familiarisation runs up the hill as a group, then two individually timed runs. The fastest 15 or 20 will go into the final run to determine the placing per class. See the entry form for further conditons and information. Prize giving will be held at the venue. The nearby Gladstone Inn has camping sites available (ph (06) 372 7866). Entry forms cans be downloaded as a pdf file here (right click, then "Save Target As") . Parking will be available in a paddock right next to the start line. We hope to be able to take spectators up the road prior to the start time of 9:30am. Spectators won't be able to get back to the start until the lunch break (12 noon to 12:25pm). The terrain beside the road is very steep in places, but people have walked a fair way up in the past. If spectators do decide to move during the event you must keep well clear of the road. There are two places that would make good picnic spots. The first is lake beside the dam, there's huge open spaces and trout in the lake. The view of the road is o.k, you'd see a couple of corners and can watch the bikes negotiate the ruts in the road just past the bridge. The second spot is in a paddock towards the top, next to some cattle yards, where I think you can see a few corners. Again there is plenty of room to spread out. Food and drink will be available at the start area (porta-loos as well). |
